Do you provide IT support for law firms?

Yes — Technologylab provides specialist, security-first IT support to law firms across Greater Manchester. We help solicitors protect confidential client data, prevent conveyancing payment fraud, meet SRA and Cyber Essentials expectations, and keep case management, email and phones running — including on completion day — with response times we put in writing.

Law firms live or die by two things technology can make or break: the confidentiality of client information, and the reliability of the systems your fee-earners bill through. A single breach or a day of downtime doesn't just cost money — it puts your reputation and your SRA standing on the line.

We act as the outsourced IT department for solicitors across Greater Manchester and the North West — proactive, security-first, and fluent in the pressures your firm actually faces, from completion-day deadlines to client-account rules.

The stakes

The IT risks that keep law-firm owners up at night

Conveyancing payment fraud

Criminals intercept emails and pose as a solicitor, buyer or estate agent to redirect completion funds — the classic "Friday afternoon fraud". In 2024/25 there were 143 reported property-transaction fraud cases in the UK, with £11.7m stolen and an average loss of around £80,000 per victim. A single last-minute "change of bank details" email can wipe out a client's deposit — and land on your firm.

A shortfall on client account

When stolen client money can't be recovered, the firm has to make it good from its own funds — and a shortfall on client account is itself an SRA breach. Across one SRA review, firms had to repay close to £400,000 of stolen client money out of their own pockets.

The regulator's response

The ICO has fined UK law firms tens of thousands of pounds after ransomware attacks — recent penalties of £60,000 and £98,000 — citing missing multi-factor authentication, slow security patching and unencrypted data. These are exactly the controls that should already be in place.

Downtime on completion day

If case management, email or phones go down while completions are due, deals stall and clients panic. Downtime is measurable in lost billable hours — one firm lost around £150,000 of billable time after an attack took its systems offline.

Email is the open door

More than 80% of the cybercrime reported to the SRA arrived by email — phishing and business email compromise. Your people are the front line, and one wrong click can expose privileged client data.

You're a target, not the exception

Modern ransomware steals data as well as encrypting it, and increasingly targets smaller firms without dedicated in-house IT. "We're too small to be a target" is exactly the assumption attackers rely on.

How we help

How we protect your firm — and keep it billing

Stop payment-diversion fraud

Layered email security, enforced multi-factor authentication, and staff training that teaches your team to spot the fraudulent "change of bank details" email before the money moves — backed by verification processes that make interception far harder.

Meet SRA & Cyber Essentials expectations

We build your IT around the controls regulators and insurers expect — MFA, prompt patching, encryption and access control — and help you achieve Cyber Essentials, the benchmark increasingly expected by clients, cyber insurers and the Law Society’s Lexcel standard.

Protect confidential client data

Encryption in transit and at rest, strict access controls, and secure, tested backups keep privileged information private and recoverable — so a breach, a lost laptop or a ransomware hit isn't a catastrophe.

Keep completion day running

Proactive monitoring, tested backups and business-continuity planning keep your case management, email and phones online when it matters most — and if something does break, you speak to a real person, fast, with urgent issues picked up inside the hour.

Support the systems you run on

We look after the tools your firm actually uses — case, practice and document management, and Microsoft 365 — and manage the move to secure cloud where it makes sense, without the completion-day risk of a botched migration.

See it all in IT Supportal

Track every ticket, see your systems' health and security status, and evidence your compliance position at a glance — the transparency your COLP and practice manager need, in one place.

FAQ

IT support for law firms — your questions, answered

Do you provide IT support for law firms in Greater Manchester?

Yes. We provide specialist, security-first IT support to solicitors and law firms across Greater Manchester and the North West — either as your whole outsourced IT department or alongside your existing IT person.

How do you help us meet SRA and compliance requirements?

We build your IT around the controls the SRA, ICO and cyber insurers expect — multi-factor authentication, patching, encryption and access control — and help you achieve Cyber Essentials, the security benchmark referenced by the Law Society’s Lexcel standard. We don’t give legal or regulatory advice, but we make the technology side demonstrably compliant.

How do you protect us from conveyancing "Friday afternoon" fraud?

Most payment-diversion fraud starts with an intercepted or spoofed email, so that’s where we focus: layered email security, enforced MFA, and staff phishing training so your team spots the fraudulent "change of bank details" email — backed by clear verification processes before funds move.

What happens if our systems go down on completion day?

Our monitoring is designed to catch problems before they take you offline, and tested backups plus business-continuity planning mean we can get you working again fast. Urgent, business-down issues are picked up inside the hour, and you speak to a real person — not a queue.

Do you support our case and practice management system?

Yes — we support the everyday tools law firms run on, including case, practice and document management systems and Microsoft 365, and we manage secure cloud migrations where they make sense. Tell us what you use and we’ll confirm the specifics.

Can you work alongside our existing IT person?

Yes. We can be your whole outsourced IT department, or provide co-managed support — covering security, out-of-hours cover, projects and specialist work alongside your internal person.

Risk-free switching

Switching is the easy part.

Happy with your current provider? No problem. We take over cleanly, or work alongside your existing setup, whatever suits you. No drama, no burning bridges.

  1. We audit what you've got

We map your systems, users and security in plain English, so we both know exactly where you stand before anything moves. Nothing hidden, nothing glossed over.

  2. We plan the switch

You get a clear migration plan with dates, owners and the targets we will commit to, all written down. You see it and approve it before we touch a thing.

  3. We migrate with zero disruption

We move you over carefully in the background, with no downtime and no data loss, so your team keeps working throughout. Cyber Essentials goes in as standard.

Proof, not promises

If we don't deliver in your first 90 days, you get your money back. That's proof, not promises — and it means the risk sits with us, not you.
